[Houston, TX] - January 6, 2012 - When it comes to animals, many people are extremely passionate about preserving their lives. This is particularly the case when it comes to cats and dogs, two of the most popular pets in the world today. The fact is, for many people, a champion like Nathan Winograd, a leading international No Kill expert, is exactly what they have been hoping for. Winograd is a Stanford law school educated advocate for reforming shelters worldwide to adopt improved policies towards the handling of the animals they serve as temporary homes to. His controversial Phyllis Wright award is intended to highlight those shelters which he has found are failing to live up to their duties in terms of acting in a compassionate manner towards the animals in their care. The award shows the worst, Winograd says, that he found in 2011 among many shelters across the nation.

It appears that the No Kill movement is gaining steam in the United States in a big way today thanks to Winograd's involvement. Forbes recently printed that he is one of the 15 Key Thinkers and Writers and referred to as the most important intellectual this year, showing that this champion of animals has made an impressive impact already. The award he invented takes its moniker from the late Phyllis Wright, who is part of what Winograd calls the 'catch and kill' paradigm. She went on record to say that after putting 70,000 cats and dogs 'to sleep', she felt no remorse over their deaths. This unsavory award has been handed most recently to three organizations in Houston, Texas. What strikes many in this city hardest is that the list only includes ten 'winners' in all and to have three of those be in the same city is embarrassing for many residents who care about animals. Fortunately, new alliances are being made in Houston as people become more aware of the issues Winograd has brought into the national spot light with his list of dishonor inside the animal shelter industry.

For those looking to take action and get more involved in the No Kill movement, a visit to No Kill Houston will teach them what they can do. As the 4th largest metro area in the United States, many locals believe that Houston can and will one day be, an important community in the struggle to help end unnecessary killings of dogs and cats.
