An Arkansas firm announced a 36 million pound recall of ground turkey products Wednesday. The recall follows 79 reported illnesses and one death due to Salmonella Heidelberg.

Indianapolis—

An Arkansas firm announced a 36 million pound recall of ground turkey products Wednesday. The recall follows 79 reported illnesses and one death due to Salmonella Heidelberg.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service was able to trace the outbreak strain to the Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation. The products subject to the recall bear the establishment number "P-963". Those who purchased the products are asked to return them to the store where they purchased them.

The outbreak of this strain of Salmonella Heidelberg is antiobiotic resistant. A total of 22 people have also been hospitilized. So far, 26 states have reported illnesses.

Consumers are reminded to wash hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry and to cook poultry to 165-degrees to prevent foodborne illnesses.
